Located near Keystone, South Dakota, is the national monument of Mount Rushmore. Originally commissioned as a way to encourage more visitors in an area where the local economy needs of tourists, the sculpture of 18 m was begun in 1927 and completed in 1947. The Memorial depicts facial portraits of past Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln, and is responsible for about 2 million visitors to the area each year, Dakota.
Although not outwardly seems to be a lot to keep visitors at the space for a day, be prepared to spend a while there Mount Rushmore is more than just a historic carving in front of a mountain. During the day, take advantage of the beautiful area to do some hiking or biking. There is an abundance of wildlife in the area to provide opportunities to photograph and excite the younger members of the Black Hills family. If it’s a hot day, cool a little off at the Lincoln Borglum Museum, showing a 13-minute film on Mount Rushmore. Then take a stroll along the trail starts at the presidential Grandview terrace (above the Theatre), which is one of the best areas of the Memorial and ends at Studio sculptor. Here you can learn more about the process involved with the creation of a large-scale Memorial. If you have children in your party, there is also a children’s program led by a ranger who takes about a half hour, but they must be accompanied by their parents.
Once dusk falls rangers lead an evening lighting ceremony. This takes place in the amphitheatre, and learn how the sculpture was created. Immediately after the presentation, Mount Rushmore is illuminated and stays on for two hours.
If you only have a few hours to spend, then try to arrange a visit, so that you not only enjoy the Memorial to sunlight, but also can experience the magic of seeing the huge sculpture illuminated against the dark night sky.
